A very accessible and scholarly work, which focuses on Cleopatra VII, The Last Queens of Egypt will reward a reader's time. Ms. Ashton's writing style is engaging and she maintains a strong progression throughout the work which more than holds one's interest. There are many fascinating bits of trivia from history and famous moments are placed squarely in historical context without romanticizing them. The book traces an arc from early role models such as Queen Neithhotep (c. 3000-2890 BCE) through Cleopatra's ancestors, to Cleopatra VII herself, and on to the legacy left behind after her death. The author is clearly knowledgeable on the subject matter and presents it clearly and concisely. The Last Queens of Egypt is a book which anyone interested in Cleopatra VII, or Egypt, would find eminently enjoyable.
